Several Ways to Turn Off Subtitles on Netflix

Turning Netflix subtitles off varies with different kinds of devices, depending on the one you’re using. So we’re going to detail each and every one for you below.

On Android device

  • While your show or movie plays, tap on your screen.
  • Dialogue icon should appear. When it does, select it.
  • Your audio or subtitle options will pop up. Select the off option under Subtitles.

On iPhone and iPad

  • While your show or movie plays, tap on your screen.
  • A dialogue icon should appear. When it does, select it.
  • Your preferred audio or subtitle options will pop up. Select the off option under Subtitles.
  • Tap the X icon to continue playback.

On PC/Mac

  • Launch Netflix via its website and pick a show or movie to watch.
  • While your show or movie plays, move your mouse around.
  • A dialogue icon should appear. When it does, select it.
  • Your preferred audio or subtitle options will pop up. Select the off option under Subtitles.

On Google Chromecast

  • While your show or movie plays, tap on your screen.

On Xbox One

  • While your show or movie plays, hit the Down button on your controller.
  • Dialogue icon should appear. When it does, select it.
  • Your preferred audio or subtitle options will pop up. Select the off option under Subtitles.

If you’ve turned off subtitles but they’re still showing up, then you’ll have to go to your Xbox’s settings. Select Ease of Access, then Closed Captioning, and tick the Closed Captioning Off box.

On PlayStation 4

  •  While your show or movie plays, hit the Down button on your controller.
  • Dialogue icon should appear. When it does, select it.
  • Your preferred audio or subtitle options will pop up. Select the off option under Subtitles.

On Roku

  • Once you’ve chosen a show or movie to watch, select Audio & Subtitles from the description page.
  • Choose off for subtitles.
  • Press the back button to exit out of the description page.
  • Hit Play to start your movie or show.

If you have a newer Roku device, you can also turn off subtitles while your movie or show is playing.

  • While your show or movie plays, press Up or Down on your remote.
  • Select Audio & Subtitles.

On Apple TV

  • While your show or movie plays, swipe down on your remote. (For Apple TV 2 and 3, hold down the Center button on your remote).
  • Your preferred audio or subtitle options will pop up. Select the off option under Subtitles.

On Blu-ray Player

  • While your show or movie plays, hit the Down button on your remote.
  • A Dialogue icon should appear. When it does, select it.
  • Your preferred audio or subtitle options will pop up. Select the off option under Subtitles.

If you’re watching a show or movie through Netflix’s streaming services, it only takes a couple of clicks to turn on subtitles.

On Android Device

  • Start the watching the video you want to add subtitles to in your Netflix Android app.
  • Tap on the screen while video is playing, to review the playback controls.
  • Tap the Dialog button to open subtitle options in the top right corner of the screen.
  • Tap on the Subtitles tab and select the subtitles you want to use.
  • After that, tap OK for the subtitles to display over the video.

On PC/Mac

  • Start the video you want to add subtitles to.
  • Move your mouse while the video is still playing to display the playback controls.
  • Click on the “Dialog” button, which looks like a speech bubble.
  • Use the drop-down menu to select the subtitles you want.
  • Once you select the subtitles, it will be displayed immediately.

Note: In case you don’t see the subtitles you want, just disable the extensions for your web browser (sometimes your phone’s internet explorer or browser will not be accepted). So you need to try another browser.

On iPhone and iPad

  • Start watching the Netflix video in your app.
  • Tap the screen to display the playback controls.
  • Tap the Dialog button located in the top right corner to display the audio and subtitle options.
  • Then select the Subtitles tab to display list of available subtitles.
  • Tap the subtitles of your choice that you want to use.
  • After that, tap “OK” for the subtitles to load immediately and resume your video.

On Apple TV

  • At first, open the Subtitles menu while playing your video.
  • Highlight the subtitles you want to select using the remote.
  • After that, click on the Select button on your remote to apply the subtitles.

Note: Before you can enable this feature, you need to make sure that your Apple TV is up to date. If you have Apple TV 2/3, the software version must be about 5.0 or later. But if it’s Apple TV, then the version should be 9.0 or later.

On Chromecast

  • Open the Netflix app on the device controlling your Chromecast.
  • Tap the screen on your Chromecast device to display the playback controls.
  • Then tap the Dialog button with a speech bubble located at the top right corner.
  • After that, tap on the Subtitles tab and select the subtitles you want.
  • Then tap “OK” to apply on the video you’re watching.

On Roku

  • First select the video you want to watch without playing just yet.
  • Click on the “Audio & Subtitles” option located on the Description page.
  • Select the subtitles you want to use.
  • Then press “Back” to return to the Description screen so that your subtitles will be saved.
  • After that, start playing the video and your new subtitle will be displayed on the screen.

On Blu-ray Player and Smart TV

  • At first you need to install the Netflix app on your Smart TV or Blu-ray Player.
  • Select the video you want to watch, which will open the Description page.
  • Then click on the “Audio & Subtitles” option with your controller, which may a speech bubble or will be tagged Audio & Subtitles.
  • Select the subtitles you want which will be applied once you start your video.
  • Return to the Description page and start the video so that the subtitles you selected will be displayed.

On PlayStation 3 & 4

  • You need to start playing the title you want to turn Netflix subtitles on.
  • Press down on your controller to open Audio & Subtitles menu.
  • Then highlight “Audio & Subtitles” and press the X button so that you can be able to select your subtitle options.
  • Select your subtitle options, which will appear immediately once you select the language.

On Xbox One & Xbox 360

  • At first, you need to start playing the title you want to add subtitles to.
  • Press down on your controller while the video is playing so that the Audio & Subtitles option will appear.
  • Click on the “Audio & Subtitles.”
  • Then press the green button so you can select the subtitles of your choice.
  • Choose your subtitle options for it to appear.

Note:

As for Xbox One and Xbox 360, you’ll have to disable closed captioning on your system if the subtitles refuse to turn off. Otherwise, if you enable the closed captioning, subtitles will continue to appear in Netflix even if they are disabled.
